Thrify Thursday - Craigslist Finds

Here's the latest edition of Craigslist Finds.
I had someone over the other day and they commented on a piece I have and just responded "Craigslist." Which got me to thinking about how many items I do have that are from craigslist or goodwill.  Is it time to move on or time to search harder?  I know I need some items replaced, but I continue to search for something old that can either be repurposed or refinished or that is in good condition and beautiful!

So here we go...

Search words...
Armoire, Pedestal, $15, Dressers, Settee, and Vintage
I search all these in Furniture.

I usually check the "Free" listings too, but today there weren't any.

Here's what I found that I thought were good deals.

ARMOIRE

Check out this Armoire that is listed for only $35!  WOWZA!!!  Can you say on the cheap?!?!  I mean what a steal.  This could easily be painted and maybe add a stencil to it, and paper the inside.  It could become a very, very cool piece.

via
Here's another pretty decent deal!  This looks like it might be from JCP, but I'm not sure...doesn't say.  A very classic piece and already in white!  And only $75.  Not too shabby!

via
And while this one is not my favorite and I probably wouldn't use it as a TV stand like suggested in the ad, it's a petite armoire which is what we are looking for.  It could easily be sassed up to become a cute little accent piece that is functional!  $50 is a good price too.

via
 PEDESTAL

I like this table.  I'm looking at getting a pedestal table and am not opposed to refinishing one... Mr. K might be, but he doesn't have to know my plans just yet.  This one is perfect... Great look, great shape, and even comes with the four chairs and a leaf.  The only problem for me is that it's $500.  That might be a great deal, but not in my budget.  So I will keep looking...

I do very much enjoy this table and I think it is a good deal at only $100, but it's gorgeous as is and I really am looking for white or something to paint another color like gray possibly.  Plus, it seems a little heavy for my small space.  But again, love it.

And here is the perfect table... for me... almost...
It's a cute, petite, good basic pedestal dining table.  And only listed at $40.  My only problem with it is that it doesn't have a leaf and I'd really like to have one in case we ever have a bunch of people over to eat.  We always hang out at our kitchen table and I want it to be big enough.  I have three siblings and two parents and tons of cousins and grandparents etc... and want them all to not feel squished (as much as this is physically possible in my house).

via
 $15

The perfect chair for the DIYer.  Could probably be reupholstered easily and is a cute shape!  And the best part about it is that it's only $5.

via

And here's a brass lamp to add to your "MUST SPRAY PAINT" pile... Oh, am I the only person that has one of those... oops!  I think that's my entire garage!
But it's only $15 and is an easy transformation from Drab to Fab!

via
 DRESSERS

Nothing worth showing...
Seriously.

SETTEE

I think this would be a fun one to try to paint.  I'm sure you'll all seen the painting of fabric in the blogosphere lately.  I think the almost ikat pattern would be cool to change to blue or gray or something fun or funky like teal.  And it's only $30 so it's one you could scrap if it looked totally awful! Actually thinking about it, this might be cool in my parents room if and when I ever get them to redo it...

via
And here's a good one too for only $89.  GREAT bones and would look lovely in a fun and funky color with white trim!  Wish I had a place for it because $89 is a steal!  Oh well, in another life/house!

via

VINTAGE

Boo, nothing worth sharing either...

Well, that was fun to get my craigslist fix on.  Now it's time to go over to Shopgoodwill.com and see what I can find!  Can't wait to share some of the finds I've gotten on there in the next couple of weeks... some are gifts so I have to wait to post about them!

Thank goodness it's Thursday!  YAY!!!

Thrifty Thursday { Nursery Art on the Cheap }

As I finished up the nursery this week, I was thinking it needed something on this one wall where I had hung the hooks I found at Urban Outfitters in Memphis.

I had a huge mason jar of buttons that my mom used for one of the games at my baby shower and I'd been meaning to do something with them, but I wasn't sure what.  I initially thought about doing the letter of Baby Girl's name, but since we still haven't decided on a name yet that couldn't get done.  So I just kept thinking about what I had and what I could do...

I found an old 8x10 canvas and painted it teal.

Then I grabbed the buttons...

And sorted through them to find the ones that coordinated with the room...

And then I went to town with my new best friend - the glue gun - and came up with this!!!

And here it is on the wall...

So total cost for this project was $0!!!  I had everything already!!!

Then I felt that the wall behind the rocker felt a little boring and bland because it didn't have anything on it.  My mom commented that I did a lot of art in there, but I want the babe to be interested and have things to look at and ponder!

I found these printables on Sprik Space.  I saved them and printed them out on card stock.

They only cost me the price of the frames at $5 each from TJ Maxx Home Goods.  I love them!  Love Love Love!

And here they are on the wall behind the chair!

And lastly, you may be wondering about that picture above the Mockingbird print.  Again, FREE, just the cost of the $4 frame.

I used some remnants of scrapbook paper that I had used to line the drawers on the dresser to make up the background of this piece.  The diaper is actually an invite to the first baby shower that Mr. K's Mom and Aunt threw.  I think it's a cute touch to the room.

I've tried to incorporate all things that mean something.  Well, I've just tried to incorporate what I already had at home or were mine as a child or are from people who love Mr. K and I.

Just really excited that I could complete the room, keep it classy, and keep the cost down!  3 projects all for under $15!  Jack to the Pot!  Jackpot!

O'Verlays { The Ultimate Ikea Hack }

How many of you out there own some piece of Ikea furniture?
Probably a dresser or bookcase...
Mabye a table or two - end or coffee.

Or maybe I should rephrase my question... how many of you HAVE owned a piece of Ikea furniture if it's not still living in your house right now?  And how many of you have either changed or would love to change the plain jane piece that is lurking in your living room, dining room, kitchen, or bedroom?

Ummm... Yesssss Puhlease!

Mr. K and I have probably owned at least 5 pieces of which, 4 are still in our home at the moment.  Here's what we have...

Ikea Lilberg Sofa - Updated.
I dyed the white slipcovers brown.
Still sits in our loft - I LOVE THIS SOFA for whatever reason.

Ikea Ektorp Chair - Plain Jane.
Still white.
Sits in our loft.

Ikea Levsvik Rack/Bench - Plain Jane.
Used as our TV Stand.
Sits in our living room.

Ikea Malm Dresser - Plain Jane.
Broken, but still used {LOL}.
Sits in our mismatched Master.

Recently I've been wanting to move the dresser to another area of our home...
I don't know where, but it really needs a makeover first...

I'd like it to look something like this:

Or this:

O'verlays: blue & gold RAST
via

Or maybe really like this one that Amanda did over at Amanda Carol at Home:
Yes, I really like this one.

via
Well, now there's an economical way to do this!  With O'Verlays!  They are O'Verlay Fretwork Panels that are sized to fit Ikea furniture and were created by Danika of Gorgeous Shiny Things and Cheryl of The Whole Nine Yards.  All these sassy bloggers are AMAZING!

I need to get my entreprenurial and creative skills flowing to make my millions now!
Off to work...

Thrifty Thursday { Nursery Dresser }

I really wanted a mid-century modern dresser for the nursery.  One that looks like this.  This is my ideal dresser.

Refinished Mid-Century Retro Dresser
via

I think I love it.  I love the two-tone.  That's what the crib will be.  And I think this one would match just nicely.  However, this one is from the Etsy Shop She'z Crafty and at $499 a little out of my price range.  Remember we are doing this nursery on a BUDGET!!!

So I've been scouring the Internet - eBay, craigslist, you name it - for a mid-century modern dresser or even a danish modern dresser.  I don't want anything elaborate and I'm even willing to do some staining and painting if necessary.

Then I found this in my parents little city on Craigslist.

image 0image 1
It's so similar to the one pictured above that it's almost eerie.  A little paint on the top, and a little stain on the bottom and I think it would be close.  BUT then I got to thinking... I'm sure I can find something down this way... even though it's only 2 hours away, it's still troublesome to transfer furniture and especially since Winter is creeping up on us!  You never know what kinds of weather you'll get here in Indiana and when!  Not a bad price though, $130 for the long low one.  The other they want an additional $80 for.

So I continued to scour the Indianapolis Craigslist and EBay to see if I couldn't find something better, comparable, or even just something that would work.

I came across a website for a furniture resale shop here in the city.  Love it!  Domistyle!  First of all, they have about five items I need/want!  Including these dressers... I know it's not a great picture.

via

They would totally work... right?
And I really just need the lower longer one and they are asking $150 for the dresser and mirror.  They are asking $99.95 for the tall boy chest.

After comparing the ones in Indy at the resale and the ones in where my parents live, I decided to give the Indy Craigslist one more shot.  And I came across these...

image 0image 1
Nothing like what I was looking for originally but I do like the cane look.  i think they look actually kind of quaint and semi nursery like.  ha ha.  And I figure they can grow with the babe, right?  It's a dresser and a nightstand and you are going to die, but as you may or may not be able to tell from the picture, they are a pale yellow.  And probably the best part is that they are asking $85 for both pieces!

And then I saw what Natty did to her EXACT SAME DRESSER over at Natty by Design...

via

Holla!!!

Dear Mr. K,
I know I told you that we might not have to paint this one, but really can't you see it in a high gloss white!!!  Or maybe even a plum or turquoise?!?  WOWZA!!!
I might have lied to you.
Sorry.
Love,
Your Pregnant Wife

Now go be thrifty and enjoy the weekend!

1.13.2011

--Thrifty Thursday (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) --

Well Blog Hogs...

I don't have any pictures yet because I haven't started.  I'm going to tackle {FINALLY} reupholstering and finishing my goodwill ottoman that I purchased!  AHH!!!  This could be a complete mistake.  And I'm pretty sure it will take me all weekend!

Last summer, I had spray painted the base black, but am now thinking I'd like to do something a little different.  I'm going to paint the base a gray color, do some neat knobs from Anthropologie because it has drawers in it, and then I'm thinking about covering the top in a Jacobean tan/gray print... What do you think?  Sound good?

Ok, well for now, check out All Thing Thrifty's ottoman redo!  It's awesome! I'm hoping mine goes as well!

1.06.2011

-- Thrifty Thursday --

So I officially need to craft!  I can feel it in my veins that the crafti-blood is not pumping correctly.

So naturally, I have a to do list:
-Make Duct Tape/Masking Tape Art
   *Something I saw in Memphis
-Make Vintage Spoon Shadowbox
*Spoons are my Great Grandmothers Dessert Spoons
-Finish up Pantry mess
*We are adding a set of hooks to our pantry so it's more like a mudroom, but having some difficulty
*Will definitely be posting about this later!
-PAINT!
*Use my Groupon Coupon for painting and get this show on the road!
-Refinish ottoman that I've been ignoring... Long Story
-Use Chalkboard paint somewhere in my house

I think that list is far long enough... what do you think?  Have any to-do's of your own?  My list just gets longer and longer.

Anyways, today I'm going to scour ebay for some good deals, maybe items to refinish, use, or I don't know... Lets and see what we can find.

First Search:
Slipper chair (a real want as well ever since I saw this redo by Rambling Renovators)

This one is ok.  I've never reupholstered anything so it would definitely be a learning experience, but it's listed at $99.  Let's keep looking.

This one is a better fit for me, but at $450 I think we'll be waiting on this project for a while.

Second Search:
Starburst/Sunburst Mirrors

This is what I consider a really good find!  It's probably small, but would make a great building piece for a wall of sunburst mirrors.  Think a la Ballard Designs.  And the best part, with shipping it's under $25.

Third Search:
Antique Books

Is anyone else a sucker for bookshelves filled with the old classics?  While I do love that the old classics are being republished in sassy new covers with color and pizazz, there is just something about old books.  Their feel, their smell, their character!  So... I now have some bookcases to fill, why not with some greats?!

Here is one set on ebay for 90 cents!  And one of the books in the lot is from 1914!  LOVE!  And another is only 99 cents for 7 (I think) books.  What do you think?

Wonder what else we can find on ebay?  Hmmmm....
What have you purchased on ebay?  Any good deals?  Just wondering!
